I have noticed this myself.
I am assuming you only have 1 TV card in your system. A recording
takes priority over livetv so I think what happens is your TV card is
captured exclusively for the use of recording that show and stops
livetv if you are watching it.

You can still watch the show as it records but you have to go into the
"watch recordings" menu to do it.

I know that if it is a scheduled recording there is (if you set the
option) a pop up dialog that prompts the user for action. I don't know
if the same exists for impromptu recordings like the one you are
talking about, however.
