We just have to wait until the new glibc 2.3.5 officially gets into debian64/ubuntu. It took ages until I've found out the reason for the hanging frontend. We just have to live with the pthread patch or hope that this bug gets fixed soon: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=314408
