Had the same problem with trying to use the Zalman (great quiet cooler), 
went to a ThermalTake SilentBoost (for an Sempron 3000+), while getting 
adequate cooling the fan was noisy, then replaced the fan with an Arctic 
Cooling fan (Arctic Fan 3). Quieter and adequate cooling. Still it's not a 
Zalman 7000
