I have the same box... IR port on the back is an output to drive a 
transmitter to control your VCR. The USB port on the front is suitable 
for a USB keyboard, but from what I understand it is pretty much useless 
as a control device via your PC. You would need a device to go between 
tour PC's USB and the cable input to translate as they are both USB 
controllers and neither is a device (my terminology may be incorrect, 
but you hopefully get the idea). I use an IR emitter off my serial port, 
that works fine.
