Since you are already using Powerstrip, you might also wanto to try one of 
Entech's other tools called Monitor Asset Manager (formerly called MonInfo).

"All the information provided by the display to the system is displayed in 
readable format, including DPMS and GTF support, color chromaticity values, 
recommended resolutions and exact timing requirements, as well as device 
minimum requirements and maximum limits. The latest version also extracts 
and decodes EIA/CEA-861 extension data for consumer electronics devices like 
HDTVs."

This tool provided the break through that I needed to get Myth working with 
my 42" Plasma.

Note: This is a windows-based tool.  So, it may not appeal to Linux purist. 
But for pragmatists who still have a windows machine lying around the house 
MonInfo is worth a look if you TV has VGA or DVI/HDMI inputs.
