It just means that the synaptic package wasn't available. You prollie
spelled it wrong. It's not required for the install.
I skipped it. All it is is a graphical apt package. If you continue to
have errors during apt-get, post that.

You should be able to do an 

# apt-get update

And get a list of the packages.

Then you can 

# apt-get dist-upgrade to upgrade your system.
