This is to announce a new add-on program for Myth aimed at managing
giant wishlists of shows to record, including lists imported from
The program, TVWish, can be found with tarball and documentation at:
>From that web page, a sampling of things you can do with it:
* Generate/grab a list of the hundreds of top movies you wish to see
someday, and arrange for them to be recorded if they are ever on TV.
* Look for and record the pilot episodes of the top TV series
of all time, in case you missed them, or want to try them out.
* Grab a list of all the episodes of a TV show with rankings, and then
record and watch only the best episodes, avoiding the turkeys. Do
anything from all but the worst on good series to only the very top
on occasionally good series. I call this an "abridged" TV series.
* Record all of a series except for a list of exceptions -- episodes
you have already seen, or known turkeys.
* Record episodes of a series in order, even if they are not airing
* Import lists generated by others -- critics, friends, other
watchers even programs that amalgamate -- by fetching from a web
URL. A critic you trust can make a recommendation in the morning that
causes your recorder to automatically record the show that night.
* Place wish results in a lower priority and autoexpire class so
they only go into spare disk space, never interfering with more
Right now this is implemented as a perl script you run by hand or from
the cron. There are detailed setup instructions that should be easy
for anybody with moderate linux experience. Sometime down the road
a web-based GUI will be developed that will be slightly less powerful
but easier to learn.
Installed by default, it will make MythTV record any movies from the list
of the top 300 or so, plus the pilot episodes of the top 100 series of
all time, plus a number of the most famous TV episodes of all time.
There are sample files for popular series to easy add abridged viewing
of them. It's some minor work with a text editor to remove movies you
have seen from the movie lists etc.
This works well with Myth .16 and .17 with DataDirect. It should
work partially with .17 and other sources but some tweaks are needed
and I appreciate such patches from overseas testers.
