Can read the headlines but once a browser brings up the actual page
it's unreadable.

Not what you want, but you may be interested to know that someone
posted a tool to alow mythtvosd to pop up your email subject lines on
screen recently. Search for "Script to check for POP3 mail and display
>From and Subject via mythtvosd".
