I've seen this before.  Have you checked your mythgame settings?

I remember when I setup mythgame, xmame was too new.  I had to drop it 
back a couple of revs to make it launch.  Also In mythgame settings I 
had forgotten to setup the listing to include "system genre".  I had 
only genre I believe.  It reacted just as you described.
