[mythtv-users] VCR video to MythTV (USB, 1394 or S-Video capture solutions)

A Linux only solution would be to use Kino do capture and edit, and
Avidemux to convert.  For the truly adventurous, there is Cinelerra, a
very full featured Linux video editor/compositor.
