I have mythfrontend pointing to /dev/dsp for my audio...which hasn't changed.
Here is my modprobe.conf and my .asoundrc
modprobe
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 && /usr/sbin/a
lsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/mo
dprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0
my asoundrc is the same as Jarods example.

Oh..and after looking again.. I found the chipset. SiS 735 SI7012 (intel8x0)
