[mythtv-users] Mythtv/gentoo hangs when playing live or recorded video

Have managed to get my mythtv box to scan channels and previously
managed to watch live tv with mplayer however now when I either try to
play live TV or watch a previously recorded video the screen goes
blank and the box seems to hang (well I cant do ctl+alt+f1 etc. to get
another console).

It seems to be recording stuff with the back-end because when I go
into play recordings I can c the video clip being played in the little
box bottom right.  The colors in this seem a little odd but thats
probably another story.

This is on a recently built gentoo system with 2.6.12 kernel.

Any ideas?
