I started with a blank slate (completely replacing my frontend/backend 
combo with a high-def setup using a separate frontend/backend) and 
bought big and loud (but reliable) components/motherboard/case and put 
the frontend and backend in another room with a hole in the wall for cables.

It's also much prettier than even the most beautiful of cases--because I 
don't have a mess of cables, etc. in the viewing room.
