[mythtv-users] NuppelVideo container format

Hi folks,

I have a theoretical question about the NuppelVideo container format
used by MythTV.
Why does it save video in this format and not in MPEG-2 video stream?
As I understand saving MPEG-2 video stream in NuppelVideo format is
very much space-consuming.
Thus for instance 1,756MB Myth native format can be saved in DVD
quality but as much as 899MB only!!! It's twice bigger than the DVD
quality.
Why Myth format is so large and why can't it be saved in raw MPEG-2 video
stream for later playback?
