You might check out the various pieces of hardware which are supported by
LCDproc (sourceforge). There are various clients available which can talk
to the LCDd server and pass info. How much and what depends on the
hardware. There are at least parallel port, serial and USB types
supported. I'm just installing for the 16 chart by 2 line iMON VFD in a
Silverstone case.
