I should have been a little more clear in my initial question.  I was aware of
the fact that the minimalist-wide screen was for HD.  I do in fact have an HD
Tv.  However, I'm 99% sure mine only supports 480p and 1080i (hence my 2nd
response).    Based on other responses, I'm going to check the DPI as soon as I
get home.

Understood.  Like I said, I ran without a desktop "environment" (GNOME / KDE) a
while back and had focus issues.  I think I even briefly tried TWM, although I
can't be sure.  Since I'm having strange DVD / CD issues which could be caused
by the desktop environment trying to be "too" smart and grabbing the device, I
think it's time to go back and explore something like TWM, ratpoison, or other.
