Where is the mythfrontend logfile located?  The only thing I see is
the mythbackend and mythfilldatabase log.  I tried launching it from
command line but it would lock up the whole system.

Actually, I just tried it again to see what info I could glean from it
and it appears to be working flawlessly now.  Don't know what the heck
the problem was, but as long as it works that's all that matters.
