Don't forget that every time you update your kernel you're going to have to
restart, and then re-install the correct version of lirc for the kernel.
This one got me recently. One night a week and a half ago, I updated my
kernel on a fedora core system. I promptly fell asleep and thus didn't
restart into the new kernel and install the new version of lirc to match the
kernel.
Then this weekend just gone, I shut down the machine, to install a new hard
drive, and low and behold when the machine booted back up, my remotes
wouldn't work.

Took me a while to figure that one out.. But I'll never forget it!

It's worth a try reinstalling/updating lirc just to make sure, it won't
overwrite your config (well it didn't on my system..)
