My experience was totally different. I have an old Gateway system  
built in 1999, with an nVidia TNT2 with 32 MB of RAM in it, and after  
installing an nVidia binary driver. 2D and 3D systems were fully  
functional (I even got a PSX emulator to run in Linux at 1024x768, 30 
+ FPS, all effects on, except motion-blur). Coincidentally, I also  
started using Linux about seven years ago.
