[mythtv-users] New Mythtv/Plextor TV402U installation, some questions

I have installed Mythtv on a gentoo box, the first of three I intend
to install on, for the severalth time. Each time, I seem to get a
little closer, but I have encountered issues; perhaps I can ask some
questions here.

I reinstalled both mysql and mythtv, after being pretty sure I had
deleted all left over databases, config files, all leftovers. This
time, after a more meticulous run through all setups, I was able to
watch Live TV the first time around. But only one channel.

The most important problem I have, I think, is that once I set things
up, there is no way to get them right again, except to clear
everything and reinstall. I'm not sure where the issue is. Is it
permissions? Something doesn't change.

I have found it best to type in a channel list manually, as I am on an
island with cable tv time shifted by a week, but some channels by live
satellite feed. I am able to complete an online setup for populating
channels (forget the web site temporarily) but the numbers used do not
correspond, are incorrect, and the simple typed in channel numbers
have worked before. There are only about 25 channels here, anyway.
But today, somehow, only channel 5 worked. I had seven or so channels
typed in. And I reran the mythtv-setup program, botth with and
without mythbackend running, and also mythfilldatabase with and
without mythbackend running. (Various docs leave a confusing message
about the need to not be running mythbackend when running myth-setup).

I even changed the rerference in one of the setups to default channel.
No change in behavior. Recording failed, perhaps because of the
inability to change channels?

Well, things were working well today, except for this!

Also, I might mention that previous installations led to unusual,
corrupted video output of several types to the screen.

I have seen a reference to how to clear the database. I can't find it
now! Can someone point me to that?

Thank you for any advice. And thank you for this amazing application!
