I have just recovered from a case of 'tinny' which appears to have
arisen as a result of an upgrade from Fedora 4 to Fedora 5.

The problem went away when I compiled alsa from scratch. Go to alsa.org,
download the alsa-driver and alsa-lib tarballs as a minimum. The tools
and utils are good to have.
Then run ./configure --help to figure out what you need on the command
line... at the least you will need --with-cards='your-hardware' and make
and install.

The alsa configurator did not produce the same audio result..
