ok, yeah there's a small leak in the ui code:- 
http://difo.gotadsl.co.uk/fe-esc.png (each peak is the menu restarting)

but I'm surprised you can get to an out of memory error by repeatedly hitting 
esc.... how many times do you need to do it?
