You're probably going to want a PVR-250 or PVR-150, but not for the reason
you think.  You'll probably want it so that you get the hardware MPEG-2
compression.   The PVR cards won't change channels on the cable box,
though;  you'll need an IR blaster or serial connection to accomplish that.

You can definitely do this, but you'll have higher CPU utilization during
recording, and you may have trouble getting it set up properly;  it's not
always easy to get the ivtv drivers and the bttv drivers to cooperate.
