[mythtv-users] Anyone have a CX8800-based capture card workingin MythTV?

Sorry to be confusing. My problem is that I can't hear sound from the TV
application or from any recorded files. I can hear sound from AVI files,
MPEG files, DVDs, VCDs, or MP3 files, just not the TV application or files
recorded with Myth.

When I use the tvtime application and I unmute the analog Aux input on the
playback section of alsamixer I can hear sound. If I leave it unmuted and go
into myth, I get sound, but it's behind or ahead depending on what card I
use. If I use the onboard Intel 8x0 card it is behind, if I use the Audigy,
it is ahead.

I know myth uses the /dev/dsp device to record/playback sound in Mythtv. I
think that's where the issue is. I read somewhere that I can configure the
alsamixer and select a channel on the capture screen to send that data to
/dev/dsp. I can do that on the Intel 8x0 onboard soundcard, but when I
launch tvtime and do an aplay /dev/dsp, I get static with no sound.

I decided to swap in my Audigy card thinking the onboard sound might have
issues, but while I can see all inputs on alsamixer, unmute certain inputs
on the playback screen, I can't select an input as a capture source.

If I look in alsamixer for playback, I see from left to right:

Master (no mute allowed)
Tone (unmuted)
Bass (no mute allowed)
Treble (no mute allowed)
PCM (no mute allowed)
PCM Center (no mute allowed)
PCM Front (no mute allowed)
PCM LFE (no mute allowed)
PCM Surround (no mute allowed)
Front (no mute allowed)
Surround (no mute allowed)
Center (no mute allowed)
LFE (no mute allowed)
Synth (no mute allowed)
Line (unmuted)
Line2 (no mute allowed)
CD (unmuted)
Mic (no mute allowed)
Mic Boost (muted)
Phone (muted)
IEC958 Optical (no mute allowed)
IEC958 Optical Raw (unmuted)
PC Speaker (unmuted)
Aux (muted) (this is the internal 4 pin Aux port on the card that I have the
capture card connected to)
Aux2 (no mute allowed)
Analog Mix (no mute allowed)
Audigy Analog/ Digital Output Jack (muted) (unmuted sound goes out optical
jack)
Audigy CD (no mute allowed)
External Amplifier (unmuted)

Alsamixer for capture shows the following:
Bass
Treble
PCM
Synth
Line2
Mic
IEC958 Optical
Aux2
Analog Mix
Audigy CD

I can't choose any of these as capturable.

Let me know if any more info would help.

Thanks

-Don

Don,

Your post is a little confusing. You have to try to pinpoint *where*
the problem lies, whether it's in your capture card or your sound
card.

I'm using an Audigy with a BT878 framegrabber Kworld card with the
same exact motherboard as you. The only difference we have is the
capture card. It should be fairly trivial to figure out whether there
is audio out coming out of your capture card or not (ie. plug
headphones into the audio out and check). If there is audio out, then
you should hook the audio out of the card to the line in of the
Audigy. Then, configure alsamixer correctly (this is pretty tricky, I
can send you my settings if you'd like after you've confirmed that the
capture card audio is working).

Hope this helps,
andrew
