anything your chosen media player can play, in the case of the linux "big 3" - mplayer, xine and vlc thats pretty much everything.

no thats ok it delves into subdirectories. (please note that "folder" is
a piece of windows bullshit, they are called directories :-)

for my own management I keep everything in quite deeply nested
directories, so that all of one tv series go in their own directory etc.
