I believe that the IR receiver on the XBox only accepts a limited
number of codes, mostly those produced by the XBox DVD Remote itself. 
This is probably true for most remote/IR receiver pairings.  If your
Hauppauge PVR happens to send the same codes as the XBox DVD Remote,
then you could try it out.

I ran an experiment where I ran irrecord, pointed my XBox360 remote at
it and pressed a few buttons... irrecord didn't see anything.

However, I know that the IR receiver for the basic XBox DVD remote
will accept codes from the XBox Media Center Extender remote.  I own a
Logitech Harmony 880 remote, so I downloaded MCE remote the codes onto
Harmony 880 and now have mapped many of the MCE remote buttons onto my
Harmony; without ever actually having bought an XBox MCE remote.
