"dreaded compilation from source" - I am fiddling with code because I need a
working installation. I  am no software developer of any note, except for
really high level applications behind the thick  buffer of commercial IDEs.
To me compilation ususlly consists of clicking a big button on the tool bar
. Kernel staff is hairy to me, maybe until now.
