You might try splashutils 
<http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/gensplash/>. Unlike bootsplash, 
if all you want is a graphical boot screen, then you do not need to 
patch the kernel. I use it in MiniMyth <http://linpvr.org> and it works 
well. Originally, I used bootsplash. However, I found splashutils to be 
more convenient, because it does not require kernel patch.
