I upgraded FC4 to FC5 on my laptop from the installation DVD. I also
upgraded my myth backend with smart package manager. This happened months
ago (after FC5 came out) so I really don't remember the steps but it wasn't
without hiccups. I remember having to force install couple of packages that
just wouldn't budge. But overall the upgrade wasn't too painful. I had to go
back and manually remove some '.fc4' packages that stayed behind but with
smart all this was fairly simple and quick. I think package that tells
fedora what version it is is 'fedora-release' which is one of the first
things I had to install. I also think it helps if you minimize number of
packages on your system, especially from 3rd party repos. You can always
pull them back in after everything is done and working.

If you are not comfortable booting a rescue CD, chrooting and fixing the rpm
db manually, I'd stay away from it. And also, I never use yum for any large
scale operation.
