Thanks for the data point, but I don't think that's the case here.

First, it is a PBS station, so I couldn't imagine them intentionally
encrypting. Second, I tried the file in mplayer, and sound worked.
mplayer had other difficulties with this file, dropping video or
something that I interpret as a problem with interlacing or video format
and I don't care at the moment to figure out the vf incantations. But
the point is, it found a sound stream, and played it, and sound came out.

I tried a different broadcast from the same channel in both mplayer and
mythfrontend, and for that one mplayer worked great, sound and video,
and again mythfrontend didn't play any audio.

So it looks to me as if the backend has done the right thing at record
time, or enough of the right thing. mythfrontend is failing to detect
the audio streams in recordings from this channel.
