You're probably right.  I have a system which assigns unique identifiers 
to each entity I give a snail mail address to, and I inadvertently used 
the same identifier for zonedit.com as my registrar.  Even though the 
terms of service seems to allow such mailings, It's unlikely it came 
from them.
