I'm no expert on these things, but I can report that I have had exactly
the opposite experience. I think it depends a lot on your particular
setup.

At one point, I was using my desktop as my backend. It was at the end of
a 25' coax cable run (hardly an ideal setup). I ended up purchasing a
PVR-500 at least partly because my attempts to use both a PVR-150 and an
HD3000 (in V4L mode at the time) failed miserably. The signal quality
was terrible, with or without a signal booster. But if I removed the
splitter and used either of the cards by itself, it worked fine.  When
the splitter and those two cards were replaced by a single PVR-500 using
its internal splitter, everything worked great, suggesting that at least
in this instance, the splitter inside the PVR-500 worked much better
than the external splitter did. YMMV.
