Having replaced many light switches that died after only 6-12 months 
of use, I'm never one to defend X-10's poor quality components.

However, it sounds to me like you may have overloaded the switch. 
X-10's low-end dimmers are only rated for 500 or 600 watts. Anything 
above that and they either start acting weirdly or fry from the heat.
