Good Point.  But if the machine cost less than the "lifetime cost" of the TiVo, 
would it be worth it?  TiVo cahrges $12.95 per month for as long as you want to 
conenc tto hem to download schedules.

People buy complete machines because they don't want to deal with the
hassle of building it themselves. That likely means that they're also
not interested in tinkering with it and modifying it. In other words:
the people you're hoping will be your customers already have a tivo or
any of the other DVRs that cable/satelite services provide.
