Ok - I've ran the above 4 tests.

Using digital and mixed-digital results in garbage playback.  Scratchy
popping useless stuff that doesn't sound good for the speakers.  The
receiver indicates it is receiving a PCM stream at 48khz for these
tests.

With digital-hw or dmix-digital, I get high-speed/high-pitch audio
playback, and the receiver indicates it is receiving a dolby-digital
stream.
