Each recording can be in a recording profile and there is one for 
LiveTV.   You could set your LiveTV recording profile to be much lower 
than other profiles, but this would also have the effect of rendering 
LiveTV recordings converted to real recordings by pressing "R" while 
watching in the lower quality format as well.  Ultimately, you can't 
squeeze blood from a stone and space constraints can really only be 
adequately addressed by adding space.  And with 250GB SATA drives going 
for less than $90 at times, all it takes is a few less cups of Starbucks 
for many people to afford ample additional space :)
