THANK YOU! That was very helpful. For my ASUS P4P800-E mobo, I first got
an error that there as no state for chip "ICH5". The name of the chip is
different on this board, so I edited your file and changed "CK804" to
"ICH5" and did the "alsactl restore"   I still got a couple of errors,
but a little tweaking with the alsamixer and I had it working. You got
me 90% of the way there. I now have sound through the optical output and
all speakers are working. I haven't actually tried it with a real
surround sound file because I haven't got any (may try it with a DVD but
I don't have that working yet either), but digital sound is working! 

Next: firewire recording, QAM recording w/HD3000, and HD display
(PVR-500 is working well and has been since last fall).
