[mythtv-users] Mythtv PVR-150 recording volume too low

Originally, when I was back in Canada, I installed Myth0.18 (Ubuntu package). This was working fine when I tested it playing live TV with the sound going through the onboard sound and built-in soundcard. I didn't do any recording tests a this seemed good enough so I went back to the UK.
When I got to the UK, I realized that you could only do keyword searches and recording schedules through the MythWeb using version 0.19. So I compiled myth0.19 remotely and this seemed to work and record OK. (I'm also using MythTV0.19 with DVB-T in the UK which works great).
I recently downloaded some programs that I was recording in Canada to my Ubuntu box in the UK. I realized that I could only faintly hear the sound if I crank up the volume on my speakers to 100% but this came with a lot of electrical whine. Essentially the recording levels seems to be very, very low, basically in inaudible.
The first time that I downloaded the recordings I had transcoded them with nuvexport/Xvid/ffmpeg. Recently I tried boosting the mythtv recording levels (now it seems to be full in ivtvctl) and tried downloading the files in raw MythTV mpeg recording format. I have the same low level volume problem with the files that end up in my recording directory directly from MythTV (without any transcoding).
I am trying to get my brother (not very computer literate) to take some traces for me on the console and to see if he can get sound when watching live tv from the console. Right now, I have some problems as the console (gdm logs in automatically with mythtv user) is using the old version 0.18 of mythfrontend. When I log in remotely with freenx and the mythtv user, I get the 0.19 version of mythfrontend. I should resolve this today. I've asked him to run the ivtvctl -Y on the console to see if for some reason he has different levels there.
I have no idea why the sound levels are so low, but the picture is fine...
Thanks again for any suggestions!
