A good tv should support the ATSC modelines you can find here:
http://www.linuxis.us/linux/media/howto/linux-htpc/video_card_configuration.html

If the TV supports a PC mode, as in 1-to-1 pixel mapping with no
overscan, then you can shoot for creating a modeline that closely
matches the native resolution.  With modern TVs I don't think it's
possible to blow them up with a bad modeline.  They pretty much all
have intelligent enough of software to not try to display something
that will harm them.

If your TV overscans, don't waste your time trying to fix it.  It's
hopeless.  Full-screening a Firefox window will always make it
unusable.  That's just life.  I wish there was something you could do
to tell your window manager to not use y,x,y,x pixels around the
screen so that you could go full screen with your X apps.  Then you
still can't use any of the consoles.  But once you get the machine set
up you don't need them as much.
