A 1080i tv show scaled to 1080p has more pixels on the screen than a 720p show. Yes, with extremely fast motion, you have a possible argument, but not with a sitcom or a show displaying people that are moving at regular speed.

The 1080i = 540p and 720p > 540p argument doesn't hold true when you consider that 1080i has 1920 horizontal pixels. You can't blinding look at the numberings with factoring that 1080i would be 540p at a 32:9 pixel ratio. 1080i resolution displayed on a 720p display has is horizontal resolution downscaled by 33%
