I don't know about this. I do know that when you run sid, you are
taking your life in your own hands, and it should be used by experts, or
someone who is willing to put in a lot of time figuring out problems.
It's the experimental branch, and will ALWAYS be on the bleeding edge.

You probably didn't need to run compile. When you run dselect or
apt-get and install a package, it is prebuilt and ready to run. It will
install all the necessary binaries. And it might ask you some
configuration questions, but generally, no compile/recompiles are necessary.

Since you ran dselect and installed the packages (that's what it sounds
like), then you should be setup. But, have you actually ran
'mythtv-setup' as root, as the mythtv documentation indicates.

One thing to check, is install the apt-show-versions
'apt-get install apt-show-versions'. Then you can
'apt-show-versions | grep myth', and it will show you what packages are
installed, and which version. If you get something like this:

mythtv-doc 0.20-0.3sarge1.mine1 newer than version in archive
mythtv-database 0.20-0.3sarge1.mine1 newer than version in archive
mythtv-backend 0.20-0.3sarge1.mine1 newer than version in archive
libmyth-0.20 0.20-0.3sarge1.mine1 newer than version in archive
mythtv-frontend 0.20-0.3sarge1.mine1 newer than version in archive
mythtv 0.20-0.3sarge1.mine1 newer than version in archive
libmyth-0.20-dev 0.20-0.3sarge1.mine1 newer than version in archive
mythtv-common 0.20-0.3sarge1.mine1 newer than version in archive

Then you have an installed system, and it probably needs to be
configured (database and capture cards and all).

These other packages are from the plugins packages and are also very
helpful/nice. I especially use mythweb almost exclusively, since my
Backend machines are in the basement, and I use an MVPMC as my Front
end, so I do most status checking/program scheduling via the web interface.

mythbrowser/stable uptodate 0.20-0.7sarge1
mythvideo/stable uptodate 0.20-0.7sarge1
mythweb/stable uptodate 0.20-0.7sarge1
mythnews/stable uptodate 0.20-0.7sarge1
mythmusic/stable uptodate 0.20-0.7sarge1
mythdvd/stable uptodate 0.20-0.7sarge1
mythgallery/stable uptodate 0.20-0.7sarge1
mythweather/stable uptodate 0.20-0.7sarge1
mythplugins/stable uptodate 0.20-0.7sarge1

This step shouldn't be necessary, as one of your mythtv packages will
have installed /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend, and made appropriate links to
/etc/RCx.d/[SK]xxmythtv-backend files.

You can go look into either /var/log/messages to determine if something
is coming out, or you can look in /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log, or
even you should make sure that your database is properly configured, so
check /var/log/mysql.err &/| mysql.log to see if your database is happy.
