Hi Gene,
I'd be interested to know if you solve this problem.
I have a Gigabyte board with the same sound chip onboard and had similar
issues. I was once able to get digital sound (eg DD 5.1) through on it but
it never stayed after a reboot and I was unable to replicate the previous
steps I took to get it.
So, I suspect an ALSA problem.

I've been trying for about 3 weeks to get the passthrough working with my
realtek ALC882M chip on my Asus p5wd2e-premium board. I can get
non-passthrough fine over my coax digital input, but any attempt to use
passthrough results in the infamous chopper blades sound. I'm running Fedora
Core 5 64 on a Dual core intel 830
