Here's something that may help from the nvidia tech support:

Thanks for writing.  If this problem persists with the 1.0-9626 driver:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-9626.html

please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and then generate and provide an updated bug report for review.

If all else fails, email linux-bugs at nvidia.com. Most likely they'll  
want the output from 'nvidia-bug-report.sh' with the above '-- 
logverbose 6' flag enabled (which you can pass to 'X' directly, BTW,  
without having to run startx).

Also, check to see if this is the issue (didn't look like it, but  
could be):
