I would think getting the video via firewire from the cable box to your
mythbox is fine.  The problem is probably the signal level of the digital
cable coming through the coax into the cable box.

I'm no expert on this subject, but I would try to remove any splitters
between the cable box and the main cable line.  The fewer splitters the
higher signal level you should have.  sometimes bad coax can cause a problem
too (I had this happen with my cable modem dropping out a lot).

its an easy thing to try, hopefully it helps you isolate the issue.  if you
look around with google you can probably find out how to get the signal
level to be displayed on the cable box.

My problem was actually solved by putting my hd3000 into a different
backend.  For some reason, when there was activity in the new box, the
signal level the card saw would drop, even though the actual signal level
was fine.  others have experienced this problem with the hd3000 and
suggested a noisy power supply was the culprit.  i'm not so sure.
