I cannot say whether it is safe. However, when I upgraded my backend
from FC4 to FC6, I upgraded from MySQL 4.1.20 to MySQL 5.0.27 without
any problems.

What I did was dump (backup) the mythconverg database from MySQL 4.1.x,
dropped the database, and restored the dumped database base on the MySQL
5.0.x server. I followed the instructions for dumping, dropping and
restoring in the MythTV documentation.

It is likely this was more than was needed. However, since I was
building a clean FC6 on a new drive rather than updating the install on
my existing drive, this was the easiest way to do it. Also, have a dump
of the mythconverg database meant that I could easily undo the damage.

No. All my frontends still run 4.1.x.
