You definitely need one of the usb->serial adapters listed on in the wiki.

Without one of those and a null modem cable you will get nothing but
time out errors.

I am controlling two directtv d11-100 boxes I had installed in august
and I had one usb->serial adapter that was not listed and I never
could get it to work.
