[mythtv-users] How will changing from 480x480 to 720x480 affect me?

I wonder how your file sizes are so much smaller than (6384*3600*1024)/8 = 2941747200 bytes. Almost like 600Mibytes less.

Is your encoder configured for Variable rate with peak at 6000kbps? I get about a 2.8GB file with mplayer showing 6000kbps with pvr USB2 card. Is mplayer reporting the peak bitrate?

I record everything at 720x480 on a PVR-350, and I'm at about 2.2 gigs
an hour as well.

I actually just lost my configuration and had to switch from the
default 480x480 back to the 720x480 I normally use.

Here's an episode of House that I recorded with the default settings
(480x480). Filesize is 2332995584 (2.2G). Here are some stats gleaned
from mplayer:

VIDEO:  MPEG2  480x480  (aspect 2)  29.970 fps  6000.0 kbps (750.0 kbyte/s)
Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer-3
AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 384.0 kbit/25.00% (ratio: 48000->192000)
Selected audio codec: [mp3] afm: mp3lib (mp3lib MPEG layer-2, layer-3)
Movie-Aspect is 1.33:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
VO: [xv] 480x480 => 640x480 Planar YV12

And to compare, here's another more recent hour-long show, but at
720x480. Filesize is 2332057600 (2.2G). Same mplayer stats:

VIDEO:  MPEG2  720x480  (aspect 2)  29.970 fps  6000.0 kbps (750.0 kbyte/s)
Opening audio decoder: [mp3lib] MPEG layer-2, layer-3
AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 384.0 kbit/25.00% (ratio: 48000->192000)
