Do you have the 'Use Transparent Boxes' setting turned off? It's on the
3rd page of the appearances settings.
I think the original idea was that many images would have both solid and
transparent versions - at least the larger images used as backgrounds to
other UI elements. If some screens were taking too long to render you
could change the above setting to off which would cause the screens to
use the solid images which should be a lot quicker to render. I don't
think many theme designers actually use that feature in there themes any
more. If the image element has a flex attribute in the UI xml file then
there should be solid and trans versions of that image.
