Same results on my side. Each thread is fairly hefty.

Primary frontend, XP 2400 at 2600mhz, 5700ultra (DDR3 = less tearing for
1080p), 1gig ram. Kernel Deint, 1080p output, 40-60% CPU for most
content.

Secondary frontend, x2-3800 at 2900mhz, 7800GTX (machine sees other
uses), kerndeint, 1600x1200 output, sub 20% CPU load on both cores.

To answer the original question, without XvMC, in my experience using
bob, linear, or 1frame, you need:

Athlon XP: >2200mhz
Athlon 64: >1800mhz
Intel (older) >2400mhz
intel (newer) >>2000mhz
