It appears to be a graphics driver error.  Try disabling opengl with 
"mythfrontend  -O ThemePainter=qt".

What graphics card do you have and what drivers are you using?

When you upgrade, it is recommend to run mythtv-setup before starting mythtv.  
Stop mythbackend, "/etc/init/mythbackend stop" and use "mythtv-setup -O 
ThemePainter=qt".
